Dr. Sklar

We went to his pediatrician for a check up and when she measured his head she noticed that it had grown quite a bit since the last time we were in. She wanted to be on the safe side, so she sent us to get a sonogram of his head. We headed over to get that taken care of, I was beyond nervous of what all was happening so fast! After the sonogram our pediatrician called us with the results. They found something on the back of Landon's brain but they couldn't tell what it was, so they wanted us to do a MRI to get a clear picture. This was all so scary, and we were in total shock. We went for his MRI and luckily got the results the same day (thank god for our awesome ped. who gets things done!) We waited for the phone call praying for good news, we just knew it couldn't be anything serious. Landon is reaching every milestone he is suppose to and is right on track. He is such a happy baby, and never acts like he is in pain (except his teeth). What could this be, and why is this happening?!?! Finally the phone rings, and it's Dr. Terry. She informed us that Landon has a cyst on the back of his brain called an Arachnoid cyst. Luckily this is fairly common, and hasn't affected him in anyway so far. Most of the time they usually leave these types of cysts since they don't affect you and are usually pretty small. That is what we were praying for! She told us that a neurosurgeon would be contacting us for an appointment to go over the MRI. We went to see Dr. Sklar at Children's in Dallas on June 29. What an experience that was. Seeing all the sick kids there broke my heart, my stomach was literally in my throat. I felt sick. As we sat in the waiting room the time could have not passed any slower. Finally we heard our named called and we were directed back to Dr. Sklar's office. As we sat on his couch, trying to entertain Landon (who missed his nap so you can only imagine) he came in and introduced himself. I had already looked him on the internet, and wanted to see what his background was. He is one of the few pediatric neurosurgeons in Texas, and has been practicing since the 70's. So to say the least, he is BEYOND genius and excellent at what he does. We got the news... he wanted to do surgery. Due to the size and location of the cyst he wanted to go in and drain it so it. Since it is attached to the brain, they can not remove it. After I heard those words, everything after that was a blur. Not what we wanted to hear. He took us in and showed us the MRI pictures, and explained what he was going to do and why. I felt my heart sink. Why was our angel going through this? Dr. Sklar explained this wasn't an emergency, but we didn't need to wait until Thanksgiving.I think both Dustin and I were in shock, and it almost didn't feel real. He walked us up front where we made our appointment. His assistant, Jolene looked through his schedule and by the grace of god (literally) there was a cancellation for July 7. If we didn't take that appointment we would have to wait until the end of September or November. I jumped on that, but at the same time we couldn't believe it was all happening so quick. As we walked out of Children's, got in our car, Dustin and I were silent for almost the whole drive home. Finally, one of us spoke. We were just in total shock, I can't even express the sick feeling I had in my stomach! What a day! And to think this all started with just a check up. So the surgery was set... July 7th at Children's Hospital.
